The founder of Native Bash, Abhay Basireddy is an avid language learner. In his freshman year in particular, he found instances of native culture appear throughout his studies, but as a self-learner of languages, he did not have native speakers nearby to identify and explain instances of native culture. He felt the main problem was that he did not know when to translate things literally and when to translate them figuratively, so he wanted to do something about it.
Then it hit him: "Why not have a place where people can learn about native culture beforehand, so they are not surprised when they see it in context?"
He was not sure what to do next until he was accepted into the Young Entrepreneurs Academy of Baton Rouge (YEABR). This program taught him the skills and lessons he needed to launch his own business, and helped him understand the business aspect of having an app.
In the end, Abhay hopes to help other language learners at all stages of their paths avoid his struggle with native culture so that their language-learning journeys are more smooth and fun without the worry of being confused by native culture.
YEABR helped me transform from a person with only an idea to a person who was doing things to make his idea become a reality - Abhay on the YEA program
The YEABR program also had an investor pitch on February 13, 2019, where Abhay was awarded $1000 to start his business. His pitch is below.
